Puig, Jorge - Saxophone Quartet

This brooding work by Colombian composer Jorge Puig evokes a very visual soundscape, suggestive of a soundtrack for something disturbing. The extended techniques are employed in such a way that they enhance the idea of the piece without ever straying into gimmick. The rhythmic thrust of the piece is extremely potent and has a primal energy and uniquely visceral harmonic/textural sonority. Syzygy first performed this work as part of the Herne Hill Festival where it was entered as a competition piece. It remains one of the group's favourite submissions.
